Currently, with the versatility of Magic, and the capabilities of Firearms...well, to be perfectly blunt like the weapons we are discussing:
Melee weapons and their users are getting butthurt.
Essentially the combat triangle is, at this moment:
(Arrows indicate who kills who better by pointing towards the loser)
Gunman <-> Mage
Gunman -> Warrior
Mage -> Warrior
I can't think of any other way to put it. So discuss your ideas of what we should do to rectify this situation. Discuss weapons and speciall perks that melee users can get for their weaponry, and the perks they could get for going into other branches
EX. Such as how a Fighter who then goes into guns has better resilience to the recoil of shotguns thus is more capable with them than they would be with SMGs.
Here is an Idea of my own to contribute:
--------------------------
Melee benefits
--------------------------
Melee users have the option to be cavalry units at rank two or rank one. So if you are either an SS, SL, SM, SSS, SSM, SMS, SSL, SLS (you need to start out as a Melee, as you need at least two S's, as such an LSS or an MSS is not eligible for a mount...see the class and Ranks page for more information).
The following Mounts are Available.
Horses: This stable mount has not yet been put out to pasture despite this world of iron ships of sea and sky. Heavily imbedded in Relingite and Elven culture, the horse is a sturdy all around land mount.
Hellhound: Demonic Hounds from the Demon Realm, they were once enemies, but after The Demon Dragon Salzar allied with the Relingites, he allowed humans to begin domesticating these vicious beasts. They are not as fast as horses, nor as sturdy, but they are much more capable of fighting than any horse, with claw, fang, or flames. only a capable Rider can handle such feral beasts, who remain loyal to their riders for life...
...also their puppies are damned adorable flaming critters!
Wyvern: The cousins of Dragons, they come in two breeds: The four legged (or two legged with two hands) wyvern, who keep the shape of more European Dragons, or the more serpentine two legged ones. Either way, they have been in service to Relingites for some time now, and are more capable aerial combatants than pegasi, though more susceptible to Magic.
Pegasi: Winged steeds who, after their planned extermination by the C.S.R., have been bred back to stable numbers and recently redeployed to the battlefield due to their resillience to magic, making them able slayers of Zenathian magi. A skilled rider must be capable of fighting against lgrounded and aerial foes.
PROS and CONS:
Pro: They have better movement skills than a mage (unless that mage uses wind, in which case they could be more agile than other mages, but still...) or a gunman, to better compensate for their inferiority to a hail of gunfire or fire in general. They also get the ability to attack from many different angles.
They also get the benefit of also flying out of range of some magicks (save for thunder) and most guns (SMGs, Shotguns, Pistols, Grenade Launchers, and most assault rifles...Beware the Snipers!) when they need to escape, to rest and attack another time.
Con: If they choose an aerial mount, they are gaining more vulnerability to ranged weapons...Also if they lose thier mount, they'll be back in the situation where they have to run up to a gunman to kill them...
If they choose the me magic path, they also get the access to temporarily enhance their melee attacks with magic (EX. Flaming swords, Lightning axes, ETC.), though a pure mage would be more capable of a long term enchantment: a warrior with slight magical prowess would only be able to sustain such enchantments for only a few uses.
